I've found one of the tricks in finding a niche is to find a term that is most likely to result in a purchase/action. For example, the term 'Footballs' isn't as likely to pull in visitors that are in a buying mood as a longer tail term like 'Discount Regulation Footballs' or a specific brand name like 'Rawlings Footballs'.
